How ‘Scandal,’ ‘Pretty Little Liars,’ and ‘Idol’ Became Top Shows on Twitter

Posted by: | Filed in: Articles, Charts & Ratings, Pretty Little Liars | No Comments

More and more networks are finding the value in the open communication that social media platforms facilitate — and some of the numbers are breathtaking

THEWRAP.COM – Television success is no longer measured by ratings, share and total viewers alone. It can also be quantified by social media presence — usually in the form of Twitter mentions.

Need proof?

Every hear of a cheap little thriller called “Sharknado”? Though the Saturday night throwaway on the Syfy channel brought in only 1.4 million viewers when it debuted, it became a Twitter phenomenon.

As a result, subsequent showings turned it into a ratings behemoth, bringing 1.9 million viewers for its first repeat, and 2.4 million for its second. It even earned a one-night run in movie theaters at midnight last Friday in theaters across the country.

On Tuesday, Nielsen published a study that showed statistical evidence of an influence between broadcast TV tune-in for a program and the Twitter conversation around that program.

“Using time series analysis, we saw a statistically significant causal influence indicating that a spike in TV ratings can increase the volume of Tweets, and, conversely, a spike in Tweets can increase tune-in,” said Paul Donato, chief research officer, Nielsen.

More and more networks are finding the value in the open communication that social media platforms facilitate. And some of the numbers are breathtaking.

ABC Family’s “Pretty Little Liars,” the top tweetiest show according to SocialGuide, which measures mentions on Twitter, had nearly 11 million tweets in the first half of 2013.

It was followed by “American Idol,” with more than 8 million, and “Walking Dead,” with 5.5 million.

Us Weekly Exclusive: Go Behind the Scenes with ‘Pretty Little Liars’ Cast!

Posted by: | Filed in: Interviews, Magazines, Pretty Little Liars | No Comments

The storylines may be getting darker on ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars, but the mood on set is lighter than ever. “Our show has such heavy material, everyone can feel on edge,” Keegan Allen, who plays Toby Cavanaugh, says in the Pretty Little Liars Collector’s Edition of Us Weekly (available now). “Then someone sits on a whoopee cushion, and we’ll all of a sudden feel better!”

The girls — Shay Mitchell, Troian Bellisario, Lucy Hale and Ashley Benson — usually arrive on set at 5:30 a.m. “We’re in hair and makeup for an hour and a half!” says Benson, 23. Night shoots, which can go until 3 a.m., “are like slumber parties on the set,” according to Mitchell.

In between takes, the costars often interact with their fans via social media. “Ashley and I are always laughing and taking ‘selfie’ pictures,” says Benson’s onscreen beau, Tyler Blackburn. When they’re filming major episodes, however, executive producer I. Marlene King says she enforces strict rules to prevent spoiler leaks: “No tweeting! No Instagram! And shred your script!”

Even the cast is kept in the dark about the show’s many twists and turns. “We get the script about two days before we start filming an episode,” says Bellisario, 27. “But usually one of us will try to steal it beforehand. We can’t wait to find out what happens next!”

For more behind the scenes pictures and anecdotes — plus four huge posters, exclusive fashion steals and details on the girls’ real-life loves — pick up the Pretty Little Liars Collector’s Edition of Us Weekly, available now.

Pretty Little Liars EP Spills Ravenswood Secrets, Talks Crossover Potential – Plus: Hanna’s Fate!

Posted by: | Filed in: Interviews, Pretty Little Liars, Ravenswood | No Comments

TVLINE.COM – A few Pretty Little Liars faves venture into Rosewood’s supernaturally charged neighboring town of Ravenswood for the first time this Tuesday (ABC Family, 8/7c) — but what’s the real story behind the community at the center of the upcoming spin-off?

Here, executive producer Oliver Goldstick reveals all (he can) about Ravenswood and its imminent debut — plus: Find out what fate awaits the just-arrested Hanna.

TVLINE | What brings Toby and Spencer to Ravenswood this week?
There’s somebody in Ravenswood who is going to be the Alison connection, the lynchpin here to tell us why Alison was reaching out desperately to that phone number during her summer in Cape May. Spencer and Toby are going to recognize very quickly that somethin’ ain’t right about Ravenswood — and it’s not just a lack of Starbucks! [Laughs]

TVLINE | Based on our previous first look, Ravenswood seems grittier and much scarier than Rosewood.
This is a town where the living are very comfortable mingling with the dead. The town has an expansive graveyard. It dates back to a period where there are older graves right in the center of town. We’ve seen those towns in [real-life in] New England, where they didn’t move the graves; they left them in certain places because there were churches there that had since been converted to something else… This alone is jarring and unnerving to Spencer and Toby. The town has a foot in the past; they have not let go of a terrible calamity that happened some years ago.

TVLINE | We know that Ravenswood has some supernatural elements. Will those be included in any of the upcoming Pretty Little Liars episodes?
You might see a bit of it [this Tuesday]. But the supernatural exists in Ravenswood, not Rosewood.
